Interestingly enough, although a lot of my time is spent looking for and applying for jobs… I still need other things to do from time to time. Sure, I could just sleep a few more hours every day, that would be welcome in some ways, but I bet I could do something worth a bit more if I’d put my mind to it.
Besides, it makes sense in my head that I would continue to write programs so that I can continue to learn. After all, my favorite way to learn is by doing stuff.
At any rate, I have a few app ideas that I would love to see “someone” build at some point. In fact there are times in the past month or so that I would have used an app with the functionality of one of the apps I’d like to see “someone” build.
The other day I mentioned that it is in fact kind of cool to think of all the things that I could build with the knowledge that I have. Well, I believe it is time that I step out into the murky waters and try to build at least one of the apps that I’d like to see “someone” build.
Who knows, maybe it’ll be a smashing success and I’ll be so covered up with people using my app (and paying me for it) that I won’t even have time to worry about finding a job.
It would, most likely not be the hottest thing out there since sliced bread… but there is this little piece of me that wonders what would happen if I just built the thing, pushed it out there and then see what people think.
So, the other day I got out a few pieces of paper, pencil and an eraser… and I started.
Next thing I knew I had a home page drawn out with a bunch of little ideas written in a list. The kinds of ideas that take what I already know and then push it just a little bit farther…
An hour or so later I started putting it together in a brand new Rails app.
It felt really good to be back in the saddle, building something that might just help make peoples lives a bit easier. At the very least it is something that I would use. Maybe I’ll be the only one… but for now that’s ok.
And that is what I signed up for… building apps that makes peoples lives better and potentially easier.
Will this app that I keep alluding to ever see the light of day outside of my personal little world? Time will tell…
But it sure does feel good to be building something again. 🙂
